Can I undo a mistake?

Published on June 11, 2026

Yes — and the fix depends on what went wrong.

Undo a recent edit

Google Sheets has built-in undo. Press Ctrl+Z (or Cmd+Z on Mac) immediately after making a mistake to reverse it. This works for any edit — typing, deleting, moving cells.

If you’ve made multiple changes since the mistake, use Edit → Version History in Google Sheets to browse and restore earlier versions of your spreadsheet.

Delete a transaction

If you entered a transaction by mistake (duplicate, wrong amount, wrong account):

  1. Go to the Transactions tab
  2. Find the incorrect row
  3. Clear the contents of that row (select the row’s cells and press Delete)

Don’t delete the row itself — deleting rows can break formulas and formatting. Just clear the cell contents.

Fix a wrong amount

Click the amount cell, type the correct value, and press Enter. The Dashboard and reports will update automatically.

Fix a wrong category

Click the category cell for the transaction and select the correct category from the dropdown. Balances update immediately.

Fix a wrong account

Same approach — click the account cell and select the correct account. Your account balances on the Dashboard will adjust.

Fix an incorrect starting balance

If your account balance has been off since day one, your starting balance transaction may be wrong. Find it on the Transactions tab (it’s typically one of the first entries for that account, with “Starting Balance” or similar as the memo) and correct the amount.

What if I’ve messed up badly?

If your spreadsheet is significantly broken — formulas overwritten, rows deleted, structural damage — you have a few options:

  1. Version history: File → Version History → See version history. Restore a version from before the damage.
  2. Fresh start: Copy a new blank Aspire spreadsheet and re-enter your accounts and categories. You’ll lose transaction history but start clean.
  3. Fix forward: If the damage is limited, add an adjustment transaction to true up your balances and move on.

Prevention tips

  • Never insert or delete rows in Aspire (this can break formulas). Use the “Add more rows” button at the bottom when you need space.
  • Never cut and paste — use copy and paste, or retype values.
  • Reconcile regularly — the sooner you spot an error, the easier it is to fix.
