Introducing Emberlay: An Encrypted Vault for Your Family's Important Documents
If you’re reading this, you’re probably someone who plans ahead. You track every dollar, reconcile your accounts, and know exactly where your money is going. But here’s a question worth sitting with: if something happened to you tomorrow, could your family actually find and access the documents that matter?
The life insurance policy. The account numbers. The estate plan. The passwords.
Most of us keep these things scattered — a filing cabinet here, a notes app there, maybe a shared Google Doc that hasn’t been updated in two years. And even if everything is organized, there’s no guarantee your family knows where to look or how to get in.
That’s the problem I built Emberlay to solve.
What is Emberlay?
Emberlay is a web-based encrypted vault where you store the documents your family will need — insurance policies, passwords, legal documents, photos — and designate trusted partners who can claim access through a safeguarded process when you’re unable to provide it yourself.
Think of it as the bridge between having a plan and your family being able to execute it.
Why I Built This
As the creator of Aspire Budgeting, I’ve spent years helping people organize their finances. But I kept coming back to the same realization: budgeting is only one piece of the puzzle. Financial planning doesn’t end at a spreadsheet. If the people you love can’t find your life insurance policy or don’t know which accounts exist, all that careful planning can fall through the cracks.
Emberlay is the next step — making sure your family can actually act on the plan you’ve built.
How It Works
Zero-knowledge encryption — Your files are encrypted on your device before they ever leave it. Emberlay uses AES-256-GCM encryption, and because it’s client-side, we can never read your data. Not our engineers, not our servers, not anyone.
Trusted Partners — Designate people who can claim access to your vault. They only need an email address — no account required. You control exactly which files each partner can see.
Cool-down period — When a trusted partner initiates a claim, there’s a mandatory waiting window before access is granted. This gives you time to cancel any unauthorized claims.
Printable Legacy Key — A physical PDF backup of your encryption key. If Emberlay disappears tomorrow, your family can still decrypt your vault with a piece of paper. No vendor lock-in.
What Makes It Different
- No AI, no scanning — Your documents are never processed, analyzed, or fed into models
- 10 GB of storage — Plenty of room for the documents that matter
- Unlimited trusted partners — Add as many people as you need
- Per-file access controls — Granular control over who sees what
- Passwordless authentication — Simple and secure sign-in
- Built by a solo founder — No investors, no conflicting incentives
The Aspire Budgeting Connection
People who use budgeting tools are already thinking about financial organization and planning ahead. You’re the kind of person who takes responsibility for your family’s financial future. Emberlay is the natural extension of that mindset — making sure the people you love can actually find and access those financial documents when it matters most.
Less than one hour with an estate attorney. That’s how long it takes to realize you need a place to put the documents they help you create.
