Moving money between categories is one of the most common actions in Aspire. It’s how you adapt — when real life doesn’t match your plan, you adjust the plan rather than ignoring the overspend.

When to move money

Common scenarios:

  • A category is overspent or about to be (groceries went over budget)
  • You need to cover an unexpected expense (car repair)
  • You have leftover money in a category you won’t fully use this month
  • New income arrived and you’re funding your categories for the month

How to move money

  1. Open the Category Transfers tab.
  2. Find the next empty row in the Category Transfers table.
  3. Enter the transfer:
Column What to enter
Date Today’s date (or whenever you’re making the reallocation)
Amount The dollar amount to move
From Category The category you’re taking money from
To Category The category you’re sending money to
Memo Optional note explaining the reason for the transfer

The Dashboard updates immediately to reflect the new category balances.

Funding categories from Available to budget

When income arrives, it lands in Available to budget. To assign it to your categories:

  1. Go to the Category Transfers tab.
  2. For each category you want to fund, create a transfer from “Available to budget” to the target category.
  3. Continue until Available to budget reaches zero (or as close to zero as you’re comfortable with).

The Category Selector on the right side of the tab shows each category’s Monthly Amount and how much has already been funded this month — use it to quickly see which categories still need money.

Tips

Cover overspending immediately. If a category goes negative on the Dashboard, move money to cover it right away. Negative category balances mean you’ve technically spent money you didn’t budget for — which throws off your overall picture.

Don’t move money you’ll need. Before raiding your “Clothing” category to cover dining out, ask yourself: will I need that clothing money before the month ends? If yes, find a different source.

Use the helper tools. The top of the Category Transfers tab shows your Available to budget balance and updates in real time as you add transfers. Watch it reach zero as you complete your monthly funding.

Monthly funding routine. Many Aspire users do a big batch of category transfers once or twice per month (on payday). Between paydays, they do smaller one-off moves as needed. Find the rhythm that works for you.

Moving money vs. account transfers

These are different things:

  • Category transfer = reallocating budget dollars between categories. No real money moves between bank accounts. Done on the Category Transfers tab.
  • Account transfer = moving real money between bank accounts (e.g., checking → savings). Done on the Transactions tab using ↕️ Account Transfer as the category.
