How do I share Aspire with my partner?
Sharing Aspire with a partner is straightforward — it’s just a Google Sheet, so standard Google sharing works.
How to share
- Open your Aspire spreadsheet.
- Click the Share button in the top-right corner.
- Enter your partner’s email address (their Google account).
- Set their permission to Editor so they can add transactions and make changes.
- Click Send.
Both of you can now access and edit the same spreadsheet simultaneously. Changes sync in real time.
Tips for budgeting together
Set a weekly check-in. Pick a regular time (Sunday evening, Friday lunch) to review the budget together. Look at category balances, discuss upcoming expenses, and move money as needed. Fifteen minutes is usually enough.
Both log transactions. If only one person logs spending, the other doesn’t build the awareness habit. Both partners should log their own transactions — it takes seconds and keeps both people connected to the budget.
Use memos. When two people share a budget, memos become more useful. “Matt — lunch with client” and “Sarah — birthday gift for Mom” provide context the other person needs without a conversation.
Agree on category structure. Decide together what your categories are and what belongs in each one. If one person puts coffee in “Dining Out” and the other puts it in “Groceries,” your reports won’t tell you anything useful.
Consider personal spending categories. Many couples add a “Matt’s Fun Money” and “Sarah’s Fun Money” category — each person gets a set amount to spend however they want, no questions asked. This reduces friction while keeping the overall budget collaborative.
Can we each have our own view?
Google Sheets only has one view, but you can:
- Use filter views (Data → Filter views → Create new filter view) to create saved filters that don’t affect what the other person sees
- Bookmark specific tabs so you each land on the one you use most
What about separate bank accounts?
Many couples have a mix of joint and individual accounts. Add all accounts that are part of your shared budget to the Configuration tab. If one partner has a personal account they don’t want in the shared budget, simply leave it out — only track what you’ve agreed to budget jointly.
